ROAD TO RUIN: Parents who claim to be the main driver of their son or daughter’s car are committing

Wednesday March 17,2010

By Holly Thomas

PARENTS are breaking the law by falsely claiming to be the main driver of their children’s cars to help them to cut insurance costs.

One parent in 10 has insured a son or daughter’s car in their own name then added the child as a second named driver to avoid the high premiums charged to those aged between 17 and 25, according to research from Moneysupermarket.com.

The practice, known as “fronting”, has been considered by one parent in three as a way to save their sons and daughters money, even though many realise that claiming to be the main driver on a car they do not use is fraudulent.

The research also reveals widespread confusion among motorists as to whether fronting is legal.

More than 50 per cent do not realise this practice is against the law, while 31 per cent admit they do not know.

Head of car insurance at moneysupermarket.com, Steve Sweeney, said: “It is staggering to see just how many people are happy to take the risk and ‘front’ on their car insurance.

“It is illegal and will immediately be classified as fraud by an insurer.

“Driving is expensive, particularly for younger motorists. But they should be aware that having their own insurance policy will allow them to build up their own no-claims discount, which will help to reduce the cost of their policy in the future.”
